Keynote abstract

The Resurrection of Critical Pedagogy: Critical Theory, Global Ethics and Teacher Education
This keynote address develops the idea that critical pedagogy should be understood less as a development of specific and discreet pedagogical, curricular or administrative skills and approaches designed for particular program or policy agendas and more as a philosophy of praxis undergirded by a critique of the capitalist present and a vision of an alternative future. The talk will be built around fundamental principles of critical pedagogy and  the necessity of a  planetary ethics for a new global future. The keynote will also address strengthening critical pedagogy by incorporating ideas from liberation theology and theology of the people that grew out of revolutionary struggles in Latin America in the 1970s that influenced educators such as Paulo Freire but that was eventually crushed by the Catholic Church and the United States government but now is developing new currents with the election of Pope Francis.
